The riding of Wascana takes in the southeast portion of Regina (south of the CP Rail line and east of Albert Street) and then stretches to the east and southeast, encompassing many small, rural communities.
Contained within the riding is the provincial legislature, the University of Regina, the Conexus Arts Centre and downtown Regina. According to Census 2001 information, the average family income is $71,382, the unemployment rate is 5.9 per cent and nearly 15 per cent of residents have a university degree.
Wascana was formed in 1996 by merging two-thirds of Regina-Wascana with one-third of Regina-Qu'Appelle.

Political History After electing New Democrats for several years, voters in this area turned back to the Tories in 1988. Since then, they've elected Liberal Ralph Goodale, who returned to Parliament in 1993 after several years in provincial politics.
His largest win as the MP for Wascana was in 2004, beating Conservative candidate Doug Cryer by 11,858 votes securing 57.17% of the votes cast. Goodale has held a number of cabinet portfolios, including Agriculture, Natural Resources, Public works and Government services, Government House Leader and Finance. He is currently House Leader of the Official Opposition.
